What is Cefaclor used for?
Cefaclor treats bacterial infections of the throat, lungs, ear, pneumonia, as well as urinary tract infections.
Dose
Cefaclor must be used as prescribed. Never make changes to the dosage without consulting a doctor. Doses should be taken with water at the same time every day.
Missed Dose
A missed dose can be taken as long as a suitable length of time passes before the time of the next dose. Do not take a double dose.
If using Cefaclor tablets, make sure that the tablet is properly chewed before swallowing.
If using Cefaclor oral suspension, shake the bottle very well. To make sure that the correct dose is given, use a proper measuring apparatus – these are available at your local pharmacy.
Important information about this medication
Cefaclor should not be taken by people who are allergic to cefaclor or any other cephalosporin antibiotic.
Prior to using Cefaclor, your doctor will need to know if you are: allergic to any food dyes, preservatives or other substances; if you have phenylketonuria (a genetic disorder); if you have a bleeding or blood-clot disorder; if you have diarrhea, or if you have experienced a severe allergic reaction to any penicillin antibiotic.
Prior to taking Cefaclor, you must provide your doctor with details of your medical history. This must include medications that you have used, or are using, as well as any dietary supplements such as vitamins and herbal medications.
The full course of Cefaclor must be completed. If treatment is stopped too soon (even if there is an improvement in the patient’s condition) the bacterial infection may re-occur – this can even lead to the bacteria becoming immune to this, and other, medications.
Cefaclor may harm a fetus. Pregnant women should not use this medication. The active ingredient in this medication is secreted into breast milk which means that nursing mothers should use Cefaclor with extreme caution, and only after discussing the risks with a doctor. Any woman who becomes pregnant while using this medication must immediately inform a doctor.
What are the side-effects of this medication?
Symptoms of an allergic reaction include breathing problems, swelling (tongue, throat, face or lips), or hives. If any of these symptoms appear, call for medical assistance.
Symptoms of serious side-effects include fever, severe diarrhea, dark or bloody stools, or vaginal discharge or irritation.
Less serious side-effects that usually occur in the early stages of treatment with this medication are mild diarrhea, sinus problems, vomiting, fatigue, nausea, or headache.
This medication may cause other side-effects not mentioned above. Any uncomfortable symptoms that persist should be reported to your doctor.
If overdose is suspected
In the case of overdose, call for medical assistance. Symptoms of overdose are vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, or stomach pain.
Storage instructions
Cefaclor should be stored in a dry, cool place – away from moisture or direct sunlight.
