What is Mestinon used for?
Mestinon treats myasthenia gravis (a chronic disease characterized by weakness of the facial and neck muscles, and general fatigue. Mestinon is also used for other conditions not mentioned in this guide.  

Dose
Mestinon must be used as prescribed. Never make changes to the dosage without consulting a doctor. Doses should be taken with water. Mestinon does not have to be taken with food – however, if stomach upsets occur, take this medication with a meal.

If using the slow-release capsules, it is very important not to chew, break or crush the capsule. The whole capsule must be swallowed.

Before dispensing the oral suspension, shake the bottle very well. To make sure that the correct dose is given, use a proper measuring apparatus – these are available at your local pharmacy.

Missed Dose
A missed dose can be taken as long as a suitable length of time passes before the time of the next dose. Do not take a double dose.

Important information about this medication
Mestinon should not be taken by people who are allergic to pyridostigmine.

Mestinon should not be used by people who are taking quinidine or quinine. Mestinon should not be used by people suffering a blockage of the urinary tract or stomach, or an intestinal blockage.

Prior to using Mestinon, your doctor will need to know if you suffer with any heart disorders, kidney problems, or asthma.

Prior to taking Mestinon, you must provide your doctor with details of your medical history. This must include medications that you have used, or are using, as well as any dietary supplements such as vitamins and herbal medications.

Mestinon may harm a fetus. Pregnant women should not use this medication. The active ingredient in this medication is secreted into breast milk which means that nursing mothers should use Mestinon with extreme caution, and only after discussing potential risks with a doctor. Any woman who becomes pregnant while using this medication must immediately inform a doctor.

Mestinon should be administered to children with extreme caution, and in strict accordance with a doctor’s instructions.

What are the side-effects of this medication?
Symptoms of an allergic reaction include breathing problems, swelling (tongue, throat, face or lips), or hives. If any of these symptoms appear, call for medical assistance.

Symptoms of serious side-effects include fainting, diarrhea, excessive sweating, nausea, muscle weakness, stomach cramps, breathing problems, vision problems, or an increase in saliva production.

This medication may cause other side-effects not mentioned above. Any uncomfortable symptoms that persist should be reported to your doctor.

If overdose is suspected
Symptoms of overdose may include fainting, diarrhea, excessive sweating, nausea, muscle weakness, stomach cramps, breathing problems, vision problems, or an increase in saliva production. Call for medical assistance.

Storage instructions
Mestinon should be stored in a dry, cool place – away from moisture or direct sunlight.
