An antihistamine, Claritin acts by reducing histamine, a natural chemical in the body that provokes itching, sneezing, runny nose and watery eyes. The drug has to be taken only once a day. Always follow your doctor’s direction when taking Claritin.

If you are using Claritin tablet, you have to only swallow the drug and care should be taken that it is not broken, chewed or crushed. If you use Claritin liquid, take the correct quantity.

The drug should not be taken if you have any allergies to desloratadine or loratadine. The drug is rated FDA pregnancy category B, which means it is not harmful to the foetus. The drug may also pass into breast milk and so if you are on Claritin medication, better consult your doctor before breast-feeding. Doctors do not prescribe the drug for children below six years old.
