Verapamil
Verapamil is used for treating angina, hypertension and certain heart rhythm disorders.
Verapamil is a calcium channel blocker. It acts by relaxing the muscles of heart and blood vessels, which helps in the increased flow of blood.
The doctors prescribe this drug as only part of a complete programme that involves diet and exercise. So you should strictly follow the diet and exercise while taking Verapamil. The drug should only be swallowed. Crushing breaking or chewing the drug will only release more of the drug into the body. If there is any problem in swallowing the drug, you can take it with applesauce. But take care not to chew or break the granules.
While taking the drug, you should not deviate from your doctor’s prescription. Never go for more doses or take the drug for longer days without the doctor’s direction. You should also not break the medication in the middle of a course as it can worsen your conditions.
While taking the Verapamil, you should never miss your lab tests and appointments as the doctor needs to check your liver and kidney functions regularly.
Your doctor will be able to take a proper decision on Verapamil medication only if he knows about your medical condition. Therefore discuss with your doctor about all your allergies and also your health problems. Tell the doctor if you have congestive heart failure, liver or kidney problems or nerve-muscle disorder. Pregnant women and breast-feeding women should only take the drug after consulting their doctor.
